ActionAid and partners have been working with young people in the region since 2005 and we are now starting to widen support by providing urgently needed items such as women’s clothing, soap and hygiene kits to refugees.

Over a millionpeople have fled already and around 7,000 are leaving the country every day. The UN estimates that one million Syrian refugees now need help, nearly three quarters of them women and children.

Families are arriving in Jordan and Lebanon, desperate and frightened. With little in the way of belongings, many of them are also exhausted, having faced dangerous journeys to get to safety.

ActionAid is currently working in Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan and will soon be starting work with families living in host communities in Zarqa in Jordan and in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon.

Speaking from Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, Rosie Oglesby, ActionAid’s Emergency Officer, said:

“Many of the people are arriving with next to nothing, so we’re trying to provide some of the basic items people need.

“Some of the refugees have lost homes and family members in the conflict, and many have had to say goodbye to people they fear they may never see again. We are seeing more and more people arriving every day into what is an increasingly desperate situation.”

As well as providing essential items, ActionAid will be offering psychosocial support to women and young people to help them cope with the emotional impact of the conflict, including having to flee their homes and adjust to life as a refugee, as well as supporting them to face the new challenge of living in a camp.

We will be increasing our response over the upcoming weeks.
