ActionAid responds to UK government’s campaign to tackle sexual violence in conflict around the world.

Responding to the UK government’s announcement on their campaign to tackle sexual violence in conflict around the world, Hannah Bond, Deputy Director of Advocacy at ActionAid UK says:

“We welcome the new funding that aims to tackle sexual violence against women and girls in conflicts around the world.

“Sexual violence in conflict is a part of the wider denial of women’s rights and violence against women and girls. We urge the government to build on this announcement and fund programmes preventing and responding to all forms of violence and ensure they are properly resourced, including in conflict settings.

“Global commitments to ending violence against women and girls, including sexual violence, have previously been made, so we hope the UK Government will focus on implementation to ensure words and promises are turned into meaningful action.

“This funding announcement is especially important after the UK aid budget faced harsh cuts this year, impacting programmes and progress on women’s rights. The cuts have come at a time when violence against women and girls is on the rise so it is encouraging to see that new funding is now being allocated.

“We know that violence against women and girls increases during all emergencies, including conflict. That’s why it is so important for women’s rights organisations who are already responding to and leading key work to prevent violence, are given the resources and support to be able to carry out life-saving work.”
