ActionAid has today responded to Business Secretary Vince Cable MP's pledge to crack down hard on tax dodging internationally.
ActionAid is campaigning for tax justice because poor countries lose almost three times the annual aid budget to tax dodging.
Speaking at Liberal Democrat conference Vince Cable said the Government would be "cracking down hard, not just on criminal tax evasion but on abusive tax avoidance. Working with our allies to close down tax havens."
ActionAid UK Head of Public Affairs Melanie Ward said....
"Vince Cable's tough new drive to tackle tax havens could be a real turning point. For too long this Government has viewed tax dodging as a purely domestic issue when in reality tax havens are the root of the problem and cost both poor countries and the UK dear. "
"What is needed now is a detailed plan, agreed across Government, on exactly how and when they will do this. Next year's G8 chaired by the Prime Minister is the perfect opportunity to show global leadership and prove that the Government is serious about cracking down on tax havens."
