This Friday 14th February I’ll be one of the people in over 200 countries who’ll join together to dance for ‘One Billion Rising’ to highlight the global call for justice to end violence against women and girls.

Yesterday I joined a ceremony outside the High Commission of India in London to remember Jyoti Singh - known in India as Nirbhaya or “fearless one” - who on 16 December last year was brutally gang raped on a bus in Delhi and died of her injuries 13 days later.

The December 2012 gang rape, torture and murder of a 23-year-old Delhi student – given the pseudonym Nirbhaya or 'one without fear' – was inhuman and the rapists should be punished. The overwhelming public anger about the case and her family’s desire for the harshest penalty is understandable. They were devastated and we should all show great sympathy.
