Women come out onto the streets during the One Billion Rising event in New Delhi

A few weeks ago I was in India visiting ActionAid projects. It was just one week before the elections and India was in full campaigning mode, with posters for the different parties everywhere, wall to wall TV coverage and election talk everywhere I went – from the slums of Nangloi to the coffee shops of Khan Market.

The 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is taking place right now at the United Nations' Headquarters in New York. ActionAid is in attendance, joining women's rights organisations and gender equality advocates from around the world to call upon commission members to make a strong stand for women's economic rights.

This Friday 14th February I’ll be one of the people in over 200 countries who’ll join together to dance for ‘One Billion Rising’ to highlight the global call for justice to end violence against women and girls.

Yesterday I joined a ceremony outside the High Commission of India in London to remember Jyoti Singh - known in India as Nirbhaya or “fearless one” - who on 16 December last year was brutally gang raped on a bus in Delhi and died of her injuries 13 days later.
