Jan Ravens in Kenya

Actress and ActionAid ambassador Jan Ravens travelled to Kenya to investigate how serious food shortages and the global food crisis is affecting growing numbers of children and their families in poor communities.

The effect of the failed rains in the north of the country has decreased the amount of available pasture for livestock and water levels in lakes and dams are perilously low or non existent.

Jan met children as young as 10 who have been forced to leave the family home and hunt wild animals to feed their family and who break rocks for days to earn enough money to buy a 1kg bag of maize.

Have a Big School Dinner.

Every day more than 16,000 children die from hunger - one child every five seconds. Just £5 will provide nutritious porridge for an orphan in Malawi every day for a year.

Help some of the world's poorest children get the food and education they deserve - by swapping your usual lunch for an ActionAid Big School Dinner. Why not try one of our delicious lunch recipes, such as Antony Worrall Thompson's "A pasta salad with oriental undertones"?
