Severe floods have devastated lives and livelihoods in central and southern Mozambique, leaving 100 people dead and hundreds of thousands injured and displaced.
More than 852,000 people have been affected by the floods, including 11,000 pregnant women. More than 300,000 people have been displaced and are sheltering in temporary centres.
The flooding has intensified in a country already experiencing a humanitarian crisis with mass displacement, hunger and decline of international support.
ActionAid is launching an international appeal to raise funds for our local partners to provide immediate assistance to communities, including food and drinking water, prioritising women-headed households, children and those who need more support.

What is ActionAid doing to help in Mozambique?
ActionAid is distributing food, hygiene kits and period products to support the survivors of the floods and has launched an appeal to provide immediate relief and support longer-term recovery for the communities who need it most.
We have distributed emergency kits in Xinavane, Taninga and de Fevereiro in Manhiça District and delivered trainings and awareness sessions on protection issues for women and girls.
And we are currently delivering kitchen utensils, mosquito nets, food rations like rice, beans, oil, hygiene kits containing soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste; water purification bottles to support safe drinking water practices as well as education kits including school bags, bookcases, pencil cases to support learners.
There are further plans to deliver psychosocial support, to set up women's and girls' safe spaces and establish gender-based violence helpdesks.
"We have lost everything"
Elsa, a mother of five, lost her home and everything she owns in the recent floods.
All the houses and belongings are under water. We have nothing. The houses collapsed. We left without documents, without clothes, without anything."
She is currently living in a primary school that is being used as a temporary shelter.
She is alive, but in constant uncertainty. Her family requires food, clean drinking water and blankets.
In the long term Elsa hopes to have a safe plot of land where she can rebuild her home, away from low-lying areas.
"Right now, I don’t know where to start or what will happen if it rains again," she said.
Elsa is temporarily living in a school.

What is happening in Mozambique?
Mozambique is already one of the world's most climate-vulnerable nations, ranking seventh globally in disaster risk. The country frequently faces cyclones, floods, and droughts, which are intensifying due to climate change, causing mass displacement and severe food insecurity. The most recent floods have followed torrential rains starting in October 2025.
Mozambique has been further challenged in recent times with conflict and international funding cuts through the last year, especially with USAID’s closure affecting the Gaza province of Mozambique, specifically. There was political unrest in early 2025 following disputed elections the previous year and polarisation amongst the political spectrum.
