How your sponsorship money could help

Meet Makara. She’s 14 and lives in Cambodia. Makara helps her father with fishing, and they sell the fish they catch and keep some to eat. Recently, Makara has noticed changing weather patterns and she worries that this will result in her family catching less fish and having less money.

Much of Cambodia is a floodplain and during the monsoon season there is often flooding. Recently factors connected to climate change have contributed to more intense storms, floods, droughts, crop failures and depleted fish stocks.

For the past five years, ActionAid has been developing a Women’s Champions programme in Cambodia, which supports women to become community leaders. The women receive training in advocacy, campaigning, and organisational skills - and then use these skills to build their community’s resistance to climate change.

Here are some of the ways the money you raise could make a difference to more girls like Makara:

£55 could help protect 5 people in a village by paying towards the cost of building a flood defence system.

£100 could cover the cost of an Alternative Livelihoods training programme, allowing one person to receive training in the 'green skills' needed to earn a living through sustainable farming, fishing and chicken rearing practices.

£230 could plant 1000 mangrove trees in a coastal area, protecting communities from future flash floods and soil erosion as well as supporting fishing livelihoods.
