Bereavement support
Losing a loved one is one of the hardest experiences any of us will have to face. Everyone grieves differently and in their own time, and this isn’t a linear journey. Our emotions can change suddenly, unexpectedly and frequently.
We understand bereavement can be painful and isolating, but please don’t be afraid to ask family and friends, or your GP, for support. You may find they’ve been trying to think of a way to help but didn’t know how to broach the subject.
Ask your employer if they offer an Employee Support Programme, as you may be able to access free counselling, financial advice or treatments through the partnerships they’ve put in place.
Some people also find it helpful to reach out beyond their usual circle. If you’d like to speak to someone about what you’re going through, the following national organisations may be able to help.
Cruse Bereavement Support: The Cruse website offers a range of online resources for those dealing with a bereavement or trying to support someone who’s grieving. They also have a phone line where you can talk to trained bereavement volunteers by calling 0808 808 1677.
Samaritans UK: Samaritans offers a safe place for you to talk about anything, at any time and in your own way. They can also now offer an online chat facility and face to face conversations at a local branch. To get in touch, call 116 123 (free of charge and available 24 hours a day) or email jo@samaritans.org.
Mind: There’s lots of useful information on the Mind website to help you understand the different stages and many effects of bereavement, as well as guidance on coping with grief. There’s also signposting to alternative sources of help. Call the Mind info line on 0300 123 3393 or email info@mind.org.uk.
Grief Chat: Grief Chat is a safe space for bereaved people to explore their feelings and share their story, supported by a qualified bereavement counsellor. Please note, assessments and sessions must be paid for.
For more information email info@griefchat.co.uk or telephone: 03332423230.
There are also organisations that specialise in helping people through specific situations, such as the death of a child or losing a loved one to murder, suicide or certain illnesses. If you think that may help you or someone you know, please mention your circumstances when contacting the charities we’ve suggested above.
