ActionAid welcomes the appointment of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Development, Baronnes Verma as new Ministerial Champion for Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls Overseas.
Responding to the announcement, ActionAid UK Director of Advocacy, Barry Johnston, says:
“ActionAid strongly welcomes the Government’s decision to appoint Baroness Verma as international champion for tackling violence against women and girls, and offers our personal support to her in this important role.
"Globally, one in three women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime. ActionAid’s Fearless campaign aims to tackle this by standing with women and girls world wide to demand an end to violence.
“The UK has already laid a strong foundation in this area, and the appointment of Baroness Verma is a welcome signal of the Government’s intention to continue and accelerate this work. We particularly welcome the Minister’s announcement of a new focus on strategic partnerships and financing, intimate and domestic parterner violence and ensuring policy coherence.
