Our response to the new Prime Minister announcement, calling on Rishi Sunak to put women and girls’ rights at the heart of foreign policy.

In response to the announcement of the new UK Prime Minister, Co-Director Policy, Advocacy and Programmes, Hannah Bond, ActionAid UK said:

“As Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak must keep the UK Government’s promises to women and girls. Humanitarian assistance is urgently needed in East Africa, which is experiencing its worst food crisis in decades. Women and girls – who often eat last and least – are worst affected. Around the world, women and girls are also continuing to bear the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis and the climate emergency. The previous Government committed to putting women and girls’ rights at the heart of foreign policy and reinstating previously cut funds for gender equality. It is crucial Rishi Sunak keeps these promises.

“This means urgently ramping up support for East Africa and protecting the UK’s existing spend on ODA. The Prime Minister must also ensure that the Government’s Women and Girls strategy delivers meaningful change. The strategy must provide adequate funding and be developed with the feminist movements on the frontline of the world’s most pressing crises, who are best placed to determine what support women and girls need.”
