ActionAid UK’s Head of Humanitarian Response Mike Noyes said: “ActionAid welcomes today’s pledge by UK Secretary of State, Justine Greening, to allocate funds in order to assist and protect refugee women and children and reinforce the search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean.
“The UK has been one of the leading donors in the Syrian humanitarian response, however, as this devastating crisis continues to develop, we must ensure that any response matches the staggering scale of the challenge.
“With over 500,000 refugees having arrived in Greece this year, the UK’s pledge to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees is simply not ambitious enough and ignores those who have already arrived in Europe. ActionAid is calling on the UK government to show leadership in the EU and commit to resettling a greater number of refugees.”
