Leira is training to become a whitesmith on a vocational course run by ActionAid’s partner, the Alberto Cassimo Institute of Vocational Training and Labor Studies (IFPELAC), in Nampula, northern Mozambique.

While the enrolment process was straightforward, she faced resistance from some people who questioned her choice of a profession traditionally seen as “men’s work.”

With strong support from her family and friends, Leira has continued. She takes pride in working in a male-dominated sector and values being trained by another woman. Leira believes skilled trades offer women income, independence and dignity. She hopes to open her own whitesmith workshop in the future.
