Alan meets Carla, the nine-year-old girl he sponsors in Mozambique.

I sponsor a nine-year-old girl called Carla in Mozambique and I have always hoped that one day I might get to meet her. When I heard about ActionAid’s First Hand Experience volunteering project, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. I signed up and ActionAid said they could arrange for me to visit Carla. I was over the moon.

Meeting a girl from the local Marracuene community during my time in Mozambique.

In October 2015 I volunteered with ActionAid on a First Hand Experience in Mozambique. The project was simple. On the grounds of a local hospital, and working alongside local people, we helped build a centre for victims of violence that would offer legal, health, police and support services. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

Our volunteers from Turner Broadcasting celebrating their work in Mozambique

This week is national Volunteers' Week - a chance to celebrate the achievements and dedication of volunteers from around the UK. Last month I spent a week working with 21 ActionAid volunteers from Turner Broadcasting in Mozambique. They gave up their time to build a library for a secondary school in the town of Marracuene.
