Cyclone Kenneth, Mozambique's strongest ever cyclone, hit the southern African country barely a month after Cyclone Idai caused death and mass destruction. In October 2015 I volunteered with ActionAid on a First Hand Experience in Mozambique. The project was simple. On the grounds of a local hospital, and working alongside local people, we helped build a centre for victims of violence that would offer legal, health, police and support services. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

This week is national Volunteers' Week - a chance to celebrate the achievements and dedication of volunteers from around the UK. Last month I spent a week working with 21 ActionAid volunteers from Turner Broadcasting in Mozambique. They gave up their time to build a library for a secondary school in the town of Marracuene.
