Maisoon is a midwife in Al-Awda Hospital, run by ActionAid’s partner in Gaza. 

“The war has greatly affected women's rights and health,” she told us. “Disease, high blood pressure, bleeding, miscarriages and anaemia have affected pregnant women.”

“We lack housing, security, clothing, food, hygiene and medicine. The number of miscarriages and newborn deaths have increased.

“Working women faced great difficulty during the war as we were on the first line of defence. During the siege there was hunger, cold, a lack of diesel and electricity. All of this and the bombing of the hospital. It was very difficult.”

Looking forwards, Maisoon predicts a long road ahead for those working to rebuild Gaza’s healthcare system. 

“The Gaza Strip needs a lot of years to return to what it was. About ten years at least. We hope the efforts of the people and community institutions will help restore care for mothers and children, and things will improve.”
