In response to the World Bank's announcement that the number of people living in extreme poverty is likely to fall to 10%, ActionAid's Head of Policy Anna Thomas said:
“While it is welcome news that extreme poverty is likely to fall, it is no reason to be complacent.
Living on USD$2 a day remains extremely challenging for families and women and children all over the world.
“Moreover economic growth in itself is not enough to deliver change. We also need to make sure the benefits of growth are shared more fairly so that more people can benefit.
“At present, for example, developing countries lose $200 billion a year to tax avoidance. By preventing this we can ensure that the benefits of growth are spread more fairly.”
