More than a race: joining ActionAid’s London Marathon team

4 June 2025

It’s no secret that running a marathon pushes you to your limits - it requires months of training, focus, and resilience. But when each mile helps to create an equal world for all women and girls, it transforms into something far greater than just a physical challenge or race to the finish line.

Martin Teasdale raised an incredible £5,715 for ActionAid as he took on the iconic TCS London Marathon this April. He reflects on what the experience meant to him, and why you should consider joining Team ActionAid for your own unforgettable journey!

Why did you choose to run for ActionAid?

"I care deeply about the inequality women and girls face in society. Having four daughters and managing a girls' football team, I’m passionate about supporting ActionAid who are doing great work in ensuring our world is one where all women and girls, everywhere, don't live in poverty or fear.”

What is it like to be a part of Team ActionAid?

"Being part of Team ActionAid has been a really special experience. To run a marathon and fundraise - a large part of the work is done many, many weeks before the marathon itself – but with both I felt supported and part of a team all the way through!”

Why is the London Marathon so special?

"The day itself is an experience of a lifetime. Of course, you are nervous but as you start to walk to your start area you just can't help but smile and get excited. It’s such a celebration of humanity, it’s awe inspiring. Every other runner is friendly, 99% are raising money for charity and have their own stories. To be part of that is very special.”

What is the atmosphere like on Marathon day?

"Once you start running the crowds from start to finish are simply amazing. Even writing this is giving me goosebumps. Strangers cheering you by name (get your name on your running vest!), children high-fiving you, people giving you sweets and water, gospel choirs, bagpipes, drummers, singers, DJs, and whole communities in London having street parties just to cheer you on.”

How did it feel when you crossed the finish line?

"I cannot express the elation, relief and emotion you feel when you get your medal, 16 weeks of training and sacrifice and you've done it! Then seeing your friends and family who are just so happy and proud - it's so special.”

What advice would you give to someone who is considering running the London Marathon for ActionAid?

"Maybe reading this you think you can't do it. But you can! If you want to experience a day like no other, achieve something special and support an amazing charity doing amazing things for women and girls around the world, then join the ActionAid team for 2026!"
