Women’s rights are still in lockdown.

Right now, millions of women and girls around the world are fighting for their freedom, their futures and even their lives.

Covid-19 has made a bad situation worse, deepening inequalities and exposing a hidden pandemic of violence and poverty.

But in communities large and small, away from the spotlight, women and girls are leading the change.

With the support of ActionAid and our partners, they are building a new world—one that’s  safe and equal. A world in which no woman lives in fear of violence. A world in which everyone has access to healthcare. A world of greater economic opportunity for all.

It is vital that we stand with them.

ActionAid stands with women. Will you stand with women too?

Stand with women like Hilda

There was this orphaned girl whom we took in when she was joining the first year of secondary school, and we supported her until she [was in] the fourth year. I am proud because such actions do happen and others do benefit."

Hilda, a 49-year-old community worker, describes how rewarding she finds her work supporting young girls and women in Kilifi County, Kenya.

Throughout the Covid-19 crisis, Hilda has been tirelessly working to ensure women and girls know their rights, as part of 'Sauti ya Wanawake' - a local women’s network that supports young girls who have dropped out of school after becoming pregnant.

Hilda teaches girls that their pregnancy isn't an end to their lives and helps them return to school after they give birth.

But the pandemic has made Hilda's work difficult. It's now harder to reach young girls and women as meetings can't be convened and fewer educational programmes are being delivered.

But Hilda hasn't let the crisis stop her. She is on a mission to keep carrying out her educational work and to spread awareness about the pandemic.

She is on the road every day, armed with posters and leaflets, stopping at major centres to demonstrate hand-washing techniques and emphasising the need for social distancing.

Hilda and the women's network have also demanded that the county distribute more water tanks and soap for handwashing. In response, the local government mounted two handwashing tanks at all shopping centres in the area.

What ActionAid is doing

With the help of our supporters and partners, ActionAid is helping establish local women’s groups for survivors of violence; we are providing training in areas ranging from business to farming so that women can become financially independent; we are raising awareness around periods and reproductive health; and much, much more.

With support from ActionAid, women have been leading the Covid-19 response in many of the world’s poorest countries. It is vital that we stand with them, as they continue to keep their communities safe.

Women and girls are working to build a new world that’s safe and equal. A world in which no woman lives in fear of violence. A world in which everyone has access to healthcare. A world of greater economic opportunity for all.
