Our legacy promise

This school isn’t just a building; it’s a symbol of transformation.

In Yorgbofore, Sierra Leone, the local primary school used to lack the basic infrastructure needed for safe learning. With no furniture and only one toilet, children were often absent from school.

"For the past four years, I’ve been teaching in a dilapidated classroom,” volunteer teacher, Zainab, told us. “Learning has been a constant challenge."

When ActionAid met with local stakeholders, the community voiced their urgent need for a new school and toilet facilities. So we commissioned a six-classroom school, complete with a clean water supply and two sets of toilets. The community donated the land for the new school and worked together to develop a plan that reflected local priorities.

We also provided storage and furniture, including desks and chairs so pupils no longer have to sit on the floor all day. With the new facilities in place, the number of pupils rose from 180 to 299, with more girls attending school than ever before.
