ActionAid Head of Humanitarian Response, Mike Noyes, commenting ahead of the start of the EU-Turkey refugee agreement, said:
“The EU-Turkey deal is unjust and inhumane. The human rights of people fleeing war and persecution have been shamefully traded away at the political negotiating table.
“ActionAid is deeply concerned by the failure to establish an effective asylum process in the so called hotspots in Greece and by reports of an apparent absence of facilities in Turkey to receive those who face deportation in the days ahead. Together these conditions mean that refugees in Greece face uncertainty, deteriorating conditions and life inside the wire fences of a detention camp. People, including many women and children, are held as prisoners for simply having sought sanctuary in Europe.”
