Mike Noyes, Head of Humanitarian Response at ActionAid UK welcomes the World Health Organisation announcement that Liberia has been declared ebola-free.
“Today is a historic day. Liberia has been declared ebola-free and the outbreak in West Africa is officially over almost two years after it began.
“Many people lost their lives or suffered life changing consequences in West Africa as a result of this devastating disease. Not just those killed by it but the others, such as pregnant women, affected by the collapse of already weak health care services.
Mike Noyes continued, “However, with the communities, economies and health services of the affected countries shattered, now is no time for complacency. We need to make it the beginning of a new future for the people of Sierra Leone , Guinea and Liberia.
“Recovery will take time but it must be given the same focus as the fight against the disease. Otherwise, Ebola will take a second, less visible, toll on the people of the affected regions.
“We must continue to focus on the survivors, the women and children who were adversely affected in the crisis and whose lives were devastated by the deadliest virus of this century.
