To shine a spotlight on period poverty around the world, ActionAid has launched the Period Poverty Calculator. Our Calculator estimates how much money you spend on your period each month and even how much you’ll spend over your lifetime. Your results are likely to be a stark reminder of the financial burden of menstruating.
Sanitary products are not a ‘nice-to-have’ – they are essential items for women and girls going about their daily business around the world. But sadly period poverty, stigma and shaming are universal. Girls living in poverty are particularly affected; period poverty means that they are less likely to be able to afford the products they need to manage their period with dignity and, as a result, are more likely to miss school when they are menstruating.
ActionAid’s work with women and girls living in the world’s poorest places involves putting an end to period poverty and shaming. One way we are doing this is by training women and girls in countries like Nepal and Malawi to make safe, reusable sanitary pads. We’ve also opened ‘girls’ rooms’ in schools, where girls can change, access sanitary products and learn about periods.
